Enduring Understandings

Core Visual Arts

All students taking a core visual art course will work on the same enduring understandings throughout their studies. As students progress through their years of study of core visual art, they will have a deeper understanding of these overall key concepts. The tables below will outline the development of the enduring understandings throughout their studies of Art at the secondary level. All students must know, understand and be able to demonstrate the enduring understandings by the completion of the course.

 

*** It is important to note that students must have grade 9 or 10 art in order to take grade 11 art which in turn, is the prerequisite for grade 12 art. The grade 9 and 10 courses are open level and the grade 11 and grade 12 art courses are M level.

1. The creative process is a fundamental requirement in revealing meaning and the construction of art made, via the careful manipulation of the elements and principles of art, leading to the expression of a specific intent through the use of a variety of presentation formats

 

2. Critical analysis is essential in developing clarity and insight in conjunction with personal values, historical perspectives and current events both in the classroom and beyond.

 

3. The understanding of art terminology, and convention/ techniques used in the creation of artworks as well as the knowledge of responsible art  practices is fundamental  to artistic growth.
