GRADE 9 (ATC 10)

Understanding Dance and its forms.

Units 1 - 5 = 70% Term work
Unit 6 = 30% Culminating Project

 

Unit 1: Elements of Dance 

By the end of this unit, I can demonstrate:

  • A sequence of movements that are personal and safe.

  • An understanding of the elements of dance – Body, Space, Time, Energy and Relationship.

  • Use of the elements of dance through guided improvisation.

  • Use of the elements of dance to understand and create using the tools composition and choreography.

  • Creation and performance of movement phrases.

  • Collaborative skills necessary in group work. 

Unit 2: Wellness

By the end of this unit, I can demonstrate:

  • Responsible and safe movement and lifestyle practices.

  • An understanding of positive self image.

  • An understanding of living a healthy lifestyle.

  • An understanding of the skeletal system in relation to dance movement.

  • Skills strengthened through dance that can be applied to a variety of careers.

Unit 3: Technique

By the end of this unit, I can demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of dance forms from around the world.

  • Use of proper terminology.

  • An understanding of the origins and development of a given dance form.

  • Creation, composition and choreography of a specific dance form.

  • Memorization and performance of a dance sequence. 

Unit 4: Dance and Society

By the end of this unit, I can demonstrate:

  • An understanding of how dance is used in many societies for a variety of purposes.

  • How dance can be used as a means of celebration and communication.

  • An understanding of how dance can be used to address various issues. For example: social, environmental, etc.

  • An understanding of how different dance reflects the culture that produced it.

Unit 5: Dance and Community

By the end of this unit, I can demonstrate:

  • How dance can be used to tell a story.

  • How all dance styles can share characteristics.

  • An understanding of how dance has made a social impact on their community.

  • How dance can work to form communities on a local, national and international level.

Unit 6: Culminating

By the end of this unit, I can demonstrate:

  • How the elements of dance, tools of composition and choreographic forms are used to create a movement piece.

  • How dance can be used to deliver a message with meaning.

  • How collaborative skills have been developed throughout the course through rehearsal and performance practices.

  • How the creation of a dance performance involves more than just movement.

  • Self-reflection and peer evaluation practices that have been used throughout the course.
